John Sholes & Dalton West
Hunt in Namibia

July 15-August 4 Sandy and Dalton West with John and Judy Sholes undertook a plains game safari to Namibia with long time Chapter supporters “African Twilight Safaris.” It was a remarkable trip with an outstanding set of professional hunters, trackers, and skinners. Accommodations were superior. Service was extraordinary. Equipment was state of the art. All gear, including guns, was checked straight through from BWI to Windhoek, Namibia.

Five days were spent in international travel. We had 16 days in country. Of these 11 were hunting days and 5 were photo safari days. Dalton took 18 animals representing 14 species and 3 bird species. These included Cape Eland, Common Impala, Blue Wildebeest, Blesbok, Gemsbok [Oryx], Red Hartebeest, Steenbok [2], Duiker, Kudu, Klipspringer, Hartmann Zebra, Springbok, Warthog, and black-backed Jackal [3]). The bird species included an Egyptian Goose, male and female Sand Grouse, and a Helmeted Guinea Fowl. John Sholes took six species (Eland, Hartmann Zebra, Red Hartebeest, Gemsbok [Oryx], Warthog, and Springbok). Of Dalton’s animals, excluding the birds, jackal and warthog, all were silver or better. Four were gold and one merited a gold field medal. The latter will rank 3 or 4 all time in Namibia. Several will make SCI book. John’s were silver or better and three were gold – Cape Eland, Gemsbok [Oryx], and Warthog.

We spent five days touring Etosha National Park where we saw all the “big five,” visited the Atlantic sea coast for a seal and dolphin expedition, climbed the world famous sand dunes of the Namib Desert, visited a petrified forest, a site with 5,000 year old rock drawings, and several other remarkable venues.
